Original vs Aftermarket MoonSwatch Strap: Differences, Prices and How They Feel on the Wrist

Original vs Aftermarket MoonSwatch Strap: Differences, Prices and How They Feel on the Wrist

Anyone who buys a MoonSwatch soon notices that the Velcro strap in the box looks great but does not suit everybody. It is stiff at first, thick, and hard to fine-tune, which is why many owners start looking for something else within days. So the question is always the same: stay with the official strap, or choose an independent strap made to be compatible with the MoonSwatch? Here is an honest comparison of both routes, with prices and materials.

The original strap: what it really means

The Velcro strap in the box

Every MoonSwatch ships with a Velcro strap inspired by the nylon straps astronauts wore over their suits. It matches the dial colours and the Bioceramic keeper, and it is part of the watch's identity. If you wear the watch for its "mission" look, it is hard to beat. The drawbacks are well known: the material is fairly rigid, the hook-and-loop closure does not allow fine adjustment, and it holds moisture in hot weather or after sport.

The rubber straps sold by Swatch

Since January 2025 Swatch has also sold two-tone rubber straps for the Bioceramic MoonSwatch collection on its own website, in eleven colour combinations. They keep the Velcro closure and the Bioceramic loop, with a texture evoking the astronaut suit outside and lunar craters inside, plus a quick-release system and a tool in the box. The press reported a price of about 45 EUR; check swatch.com for the current price in your country.

The aftermarket strap: what changes

Materials: FKM rubber or silicone

This is where you feel the difference. Cheap silicone is soft but attracts dust and marks easily; FKM rubber (fluoroelastomer) is more elastic, resists sweat, sunscreen and UV better, and keeps its flexibility over time. It is the same family of material used on many dive straps. For a daily strap, including summer, this matters most.

20 mm lugs and curved ends

The MoonSwatch has a 20 mm lug width and a 42 mm Bioceramic case. Curved-end straps follow the shape of the case and leave no gap between lug and strap, a visual detail that sets them apart from a generic straight strap. That is why straps for the MoonSwatch are designed with a specific curve; matching the width alone is not enough.

Buckle, spring bars and tool

Unlike Velcro, a pin buckle lets you pick the exact hole and gives more stability on the wrist, especially for slim or large wrists. WatchCollab straps for the MoonSwatch come with spring bars and a changing tool included, so you can swap the strap yourself in a minute.

Price comparison

  • Velcro strap in the box: included in the watch price.
  • Official Swatch rubber strap: about 45 EUR (check swatch.com for your country).
  • Independent WatchCollab strap: from 39.99 EUR, spring bars and tool included.

The price gap is small, and it is not the main point: what matters is what you get for it. Our straps for Omega x Swatch MoonSwatch cover rubber, leather, NATO and steel in many finishes, while the official offer is limited to rubber with Velcro. If you want more than one, "buy 3, get the 4th free" lowers the average cost a lot.

When the original is the better choice

We sell aftermarket straps, but we will not recommend something you do not need. The original makes more sense if:

  • you want total visual consistency, with Omega x Swatch and Speedmaster logos on the strap;
  • you plan to resell the watch with everything stock;
  • you like Velcro and are comfortable with hook-and-loop adjustment;
  • you prefer a branded product, even when bought separately.

An independent strap is the better call if you want a softer fit adjustable with a buckle, different materials (leather, canvas, NATO, steel), or a different look for each occasion. To start with rubber, browse our rubber straps for MoonSwatch; to match the strap to your watch's mission, the straps for MoonSwatch by model page lets you pick by colour and planet. Delivery usually takes 24-72 hours, and if the strap does not suit you, returns are available under the conditions listed on the site.

WatchCollab is an independent brand, not affiliated with Swatch Group or Omega. References to MoonSwatch and Omega x Swatch only describe the compatibility of our straps.

FAQ

Does an aftermarket strap void the watch warranty?

No, changing a strap is a routine operation that does not touch the movement. Just use the right tool so you do not scratch the Bioceramic lugs.

What strap size does the MoonSwatch need?

20 mm between the lugs. For a clean look, choose curved ends made for the 42 mm case.

How much is an aftermarket strap for the MoonSwatch?

WatchCollab straps start at 39.99 EUR with spring bars and tool included. The official Swatch rubber strap costs about 45 EUR.
