Every MoonSwatch owner asks the same question within a week of buying one, usually at a sink with a wet sleeve: how much water can this watch actually take? The answer stamped on the case back is 3 bar, and it is probably the most misread figure in watchmaking. It does not mean thirty metres of swimming, and it does not make a Bioceramic chronograph a diver. It does mean rain, hand-washing and an unexpected splash are non-events. What 3 bar actually means

It is a pressure test, not a depth

Water resistance is established by holding a watch at a static pressure in a laboratory tank, briefly, at room temperature, on a case that has just left the factory with fresh gaskets. Three bar corresponds to the pressure found at roughly thirty metres of still water, which is why the two figures get used interchangeably in marketing copy. The catch is that nobody swims in still water at a constant depth. Sweep an arm through a pool at speed, or hold a wrist under a tap at full pressure, and the momentary force on the case can exceed the static rating several times over. That is how a watch which passed its test still ends up with condensation under the crystal.

And it describes a new watch, not yours

The seal on a MoonSwatch is a set of rubber gaskets at the crystal, the case back, the crown and the two chronograph pushers. Rubber ages: it hardens, loses elasticity, and is attacked by heat, soap, sun cream and ultraviolet light. A three-year-old watch that has spent every summer on a wrist is not sealed to the standard it left the factory with, and unlike a mechanical watch that visits a watchmaker every few years, a MoonSwatch is almost never pressure-tested again. Treat 3 bar as the best case on day one and work downwards.

The shower: the one that catches people out

Heat is the real culprit

A shower looks like the gentlest thing you could do to a watch, and it is the most common single cause of moisture inside a MoonSwatch. The problem is temperature rather than pressure. Hot water expands the air trapped inside the case and softens the gaskets at the same time; as the watch cools, that air contracts and draws humid air back in past a seal that has momentarily gone slack. Do it daily for a year and the fog that eventually appears under the crystal did not arrive in one dramatic event. It accumulated a little at a time.

Soap does the quiet damage

Shower gel, shampoo and hand soap are surfactants: they lower the surface tension of water and let it creep into places plain water would never reach, and they attack the rubber in gaskets and straps alike. A band showered in for a season goes chalky, then stiff, and the gasket behind the case back does the same where you cannot see it. Take the watch off before you shower; it costs four seconds and removes the biggest risk the watch faces in ordinary life.

What the water does

A pool is warm, chemically aggressive and full of movement, the least flattering combination for a 3 bar case. Chlorine dries rubber, fades dyed textile and dulls pale straps within a few sessions, and it works into perforations and stitching where a quick rinse will not shift it. Plenty of watches survive dozens of swims without complaint. It is still not a gamble worth taking with a case that cannot be resealed.

The pushers are the weak point

One rule applies wherever the watch meets water: never operate the crown or the chronograph pushers while the case is wet or submerged. A pusher pressed underwater opens a direct path past its gasket, and it is the quickest way to flood a watch that would otherwise have been fine. Check both are fully home before your hands go near water.

The sea: rinse or regret it

Salt water is the harshest environment on this list, and the damage is mostly chemical. Salt crystallises as the water evaporates, and those crystals sit in the perforations of a rubber band, in the weave of a canvas one and around the buckle tang, acting as a mild abrasive and, on cheaper hardware, starting surface corrosion within a single holiday. A band that is never rinsed will be stiff, dull and faintly grey by the end of the summer.

If the watch does meet salt water, the fix takes thirty seconds: rinse it under a cold tap, remove the strap, rinse that separately, and dry both completely before refitting. Cold, not warm, and no soap.

Which straps actually cope with water

The case sets the limit, but the strap decides how a watch ages around water, and materials behave very differently once wet.

Two entries deserve a note. A NATO threads underneath the case, so after a swim a wet layer of nylon sits against the case back until it dries; not dangerous, but it keeps the watch damp far longer than a two-piece band would. And leather cannot be reconciled with water at all: repeated wetting strips the oils out of the hide, so it dries stiff, cracks at the fold and never regains its shape. Treat the leather straps for the MoonSwatch as a dry-weather proposition and keep a rubber band for everything else. The pair costs well under sixty euros and covers the whole year.

A working set of rules

Rain, snow, washing your hands, being caught in a downpour: all fine, no action required. A quick rinse under a cold tap after sport: fine, and good for the strap. Swimming, snorkelling, water sports, a hot shower, a bath, a sauna or a steam room: take the watch off. A sauna will do more damage in ten minutes than a year of rain.

Two habits are worth building. Rinse the watch in fresh water after any contact with chlorine or salt, and dry it before it goes back on. And take the strap off every few weeks to dry the lug area, because that narrow gap is where moisture lingers longest and where corrosion on cheaper spring bars begins.

If water does get in

Condensation inside the crystal means the seal has already failed. Take the watch off, remove the strap, and leave it somewhere warm but not hot with the case back facing up for a day or two; a sealed container with silica gel sachets helps. Never use a hairdryer or a radiator, which will warp the case before it dries the interior. If the fog persists or the movement stops, it is a job for a Swatch service point.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wear my MoonSwatch in the shower?
Better not. The risk is heat and soap rather than pressure: hot water softens the gaskets and makes the case draw humid air in as it cools, and shower gel degrades the seals over time.

Can I swim with it?
Three bar is not specified for swimming, and the case cannot be resealed if it fails. If you swim in it anyway, never touch the pushers or crown in the water and rinse the watch in fresh water immediately afterwards.

Is the sea worse than a pool?
For the strap and hardware, yes: salt crystallises as it dries and behaves like a fine abrasive. For the case, chlorinated water is arguably harder on the gaskets. Both demand a fresh-water rinse the moment you are out.

Which strap should I wear around water?
Rubber, preferably FKM. It absorbs nothing, rinses clean in seconds, dries almost immediately and holds its colour against chlorine and ultraviolet light far better than unstabilised silicone. Steel is the alternative if you prefer the weight, provided you dry the clasp.

My watch has condensation under the glass. What now?
Remove the strap, dry the watch slowly in a warm room or with silica gel, and keep it off the wrist until the fog has gone. If it returns, the gaskets have failed and the case will not seal again on its own.

Rain, taps and a rinse after the gym: no problem at all. Showers, baths, saunas and swimming: take it off, because heat and soap will beat a 3 bar case long before depth does. Never press the pushers with wet hands, rinse in fresh water after chlorine or salt, and let the strap dry flat before it goes back on.
