A spring bar is a small tube with a spring inside it and a sliding tip at each end. Compress one tip and the bar shortens by a millimetre or so, just enough to clear the hole drilled into the inside face of the lug. The tool exists to reach into a gap around a millimetre wide, sit squarely on the shoulder of the sliding tip — the collar — and push it inwards while the strap lifts away. Every failure mode is a variation on the tool not staying on that collar.

On a steel watch, a slipped blade leaves a scuff that a light polish takes out. Bioceramic is a moulded blend of ceramic and plastic, finished as a single piece, and does not respond to polishing in any useful way. The two things worth buying alongside it

Spare spring bars come first — a pack of 20 mm bars costs a couple of euros and takes all the pressure out of the job, because the worst moment in a strap change is realising the bar you have just bent is the only one you own. Bars are consumable, and one that no longer springs back cleanly should be retired.

Second, a microfibre cloth to work on: a pale flat surface with a bit of grip stops the watch sliding across the table and helps you find a bar that has launched itself across the room. Beyond those two items you need nothing else.
