Why a strap smells in the first place

Fresh sweat is very nearly odourless. The smell comes from bacteria on everyone's skin breaking it down, and they do that best in exactly the conditions a watch strap creates: warm, damp and enclosed. A band pressed flat against the wrist stops the skin underneath from drying, so moisture stays there all day. Add salt, skin oil, soap and sun cream, and the strap becomes a surface that holds residue rather than one that merely touches it — which is why the smell tends to appear suddenly after a hot week rather than gradually over a year.

What does not work

Four popular remedies are worse than doing nothing. Alcohol gel and antibacterial wipes dry rubber out and leave it chalky within weeks.
